Svea and Topaz, two great J-Classs clashed in Antigua

J Class sailing yachtS Svea and Topaz were involved in a serious collision at the Antigua Superyacht Challenge. The competition, designed for the pleasure of superyacht owners, their guests and crew, takes place on the beautiful south coast of Antigua. The magnificent fleet takes part in four days of spectacular races at sea and a series of relaxing and fun social events on land.

The race is very competitive, but the Superyacht Challenge Antigua is dedicated exclusively to pure fun and all participants enjoy a relaxed party atmosphere, free commercials and commercial messages. In this wonderful atmosphere the drama happened.

A video circulating on social media shows the 43.6-meter J-Class Svea literally climbing above the stern of the Topaz, another 42.6-meter J-Class, forcing a crew member to jump into the sea during the impact.

According to the J Class Association, the incident occurred shortly before the start of the first race on March 12. In a brief statement, the association said two crew members were injured and received medical attention. Both boats suffered significant damage and were forced to withdraw immediately from the race.

Both Topaz and Svea are veterans of the competition and have competed against each other in a number of international sailing regattas, including the St Barths Bucket and the Palma Superyacht Cup.

Built by Vitters, Svea was launched in 2017 making it the newest member of the J Class fleet. Topaz is a modern J-class, and is based on an unfinished 1935 design by Frank Paine. It was delivered by Holland Jachtbouw in 2015.
